Hundred and nine days after former president Goodluck Jonathan left office, his former boss, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha has revealed why ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo picked Jonathan as the vice to the late President Umaru Yar'Adua.
According to The Sun, Alamieyeseigha said it was Obasanjo's strategy to stop his then vice, Atitku Abubakar from succeeding him in 2007. He said that Obasanjo had sworn that Atiku would never become Nigeria's president.
The former governor added that he knew as far back as August 25, 2005, that Jonathan would become the vice president which was based on the discussion he had with the former president.
He explained that Obasanjo who he called 'devil incarnate' was afraid that Atiku had endorsed him secretly as a running mate and was also making plans to succeed him at the expiration his tenure.
Alamieyeseigha lamented that Obasanjo hatchet the plan for his impeachment and imprisonment in order to stop him from becoming a vice to Atiku.
Alamieyeseigha said: "For Goodluck, I knew that Jonathan was going to be vice president of Nigeria as far back as August 25, 2005. Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, told me that since Atiku and I wanted to take his job, that it would be over his dead body; and that unless he died, Atiku cannot be president of Nigeria.
"Obasanjo said since Atiku had picked me as his running mate, he would make sure that he dealt with and disgraced us. He said he was going to use my deputy to rubbish me before everybody. So, I knew."
Commenting on his choice of Jonathan as his deputy, the former governor said that he was looking for someone that was not too ambitious and well grounded.
Alamieyeseigha said that Jonathan has strong character and very humble, adding that he is someone that can be depended on for any position.
"I needed somebody that, if I travelled outside the State, I could sleep well. It was a combination of these factors that made me to choose Jonathan as my deputy then.
"I set out an objective criteria on the qualities I needed and when the late chief judge of Bayelsa State recommended him (I did not know him before), I entered my car and drove to his residence. I asked him to resign and come and be my running mate. I was already a candidate. He was then in OMPADEC quarters,"Alamieyeseigha said.
Similarly, Obasanjo has revealed that heleft N287 billion loot stolen by former dictator, Sani Abacha in May 2007.
He said the recovered fund was deposited into the federal government purse through the Central Bank of Nigeria.
